The Girls Who Mentored Me: Why Every Teen Girl Needs a Circle

I want to tell you about a moment that changed everything.

I was 15 and completely overwhelmed — by school, by friendships, by the feeling that everyone else had figured out something I had not. And then an older girl at my school — just two years ahead of me — sat down next to me and said: 'I felt exactly like this at your age. Here is what helped.'

That was it. Two sentences. But they landed like relief.

Why peer mentorship hits differently

There is something uniquely powerful about being guided by someone who is just slightly ahead of you on the same path. They remember it clearly. They speak your language. They are proof that where you are right now is survivable — and more than that, that it leads somewhere good.

Research consistently shows that girls with strong peer support networks perform better academically, have better mental health outcomes, and are more likely to take on leadership roles. But more importantly — they feel less alone.

What a real mentorship circle looks like

It does not have to be formal. It does not need a programme or a certificate or weekly meetings. A mentorship circle is simply a group of people — some ahead of you, some alongside you — who you can be honest with.

Someone you can call when you get a rejection and they will tell you the truth about it. Someone who will share their own mistakes without performing. Someone who will celebrate your wins without making you feel like you need to be modest about them.

How to find your circle

Look for the girls and women who are doing something that interests you — in school, at your extracurriculars, online. Reach out genuinely. Ask specific questions. Be the kind of person who shows up, follows through, and says thank you.

And equally important: be a mentor too. Even at 15, 16, 17 — you have something to offer a younger girl who is where you were two years ago. That act of reaching back is one of the most powerful things you can do.

Daughters of India is your circle

This is exactly what we are building here. A platform where Indian girls and women support each other across age, experience, and background. Where mentorship is not a transaction but a relationship.

If you are looking for a mentor — or want to become one — come find us. We are building something worth being part of.

Who was the person who changed things for you? Tell us in the comments.
