Over the past few days, we have seen several memes on popular women from other fields (mainly entertainment) being put in the same lens with Meerabai Chanu and PV Sindhu and a comparison why the former don't deserve as much attention as India's Olympic Medalists
Here is our POV:
1. You CANNOT compare apples to oranges.
It does not sound correct to demean the contribution of women in one sphere to highlight the achievement of the women in another sphere.
Today the comparison is with actresses, tomorrow it can be anything.
2. It's a valid argument that our monetary and support efforts are dismal for sports. Indian women's success at the Olympics at a far, far different scale than any achievement you want to look at and it is absolutely true that as a country we need to do a LOT more for them and special provisions and privileges for them are a need of the hour
3. #womenempowerment is a broad concept .
Just selective examples of exemplary achievement of women in highlighted domains cannot be the true meaning of women empowerment
Equal rights to women in society is.
Fair and respectful treatment of working women by male bosses is.
Men in the family waiting with respect for the women to join them for a discussion on the dinner table is.
Representation of women in any small or big elected body is.
Elevation of women in leadership roles traditionally held by men is.
Let's not take away anything from any woman who has achieved however small or big, in any domain purely basis her skills, hard work and smartness.
True empowerment and recognition can only take shape if we start appreciating efforts put in by women in every field imaginable
